The mayor, at his discretion, may appoint not more than 30 reserve patrolmen to the city police department. The reserve patrolmen shall, prior to entry into office, duly take an oath of office and give their surety bond in the penal sum of $3,000, conditioned upon the faithful performance of their duties.
